Leaks of the iPhone 15 from the back indicate that Apple will once again increase the prices and point differences between the models. And now we know that their bond won’t really be the same.
Avid Apple critic Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that Apple plans to switch all iPhone 15 models from lighting to USB-C mounting (ahead of EU enforcement) with one big caveat: “noticeably” different performance.
Ming-Chi Kuo says that the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will remain limited to USB2.0 pets (the same as Lighting), but the high-end iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max (potentially renamed Ultra) will support at least USB3. 2 or Thunderbolt 3.
“This specification update means that the wired and video recording experience will be greatly improved.” Ming-Chi Kuo explains. “And the new trend will drive the Apple ecosystem’s demand for high-speed transfer chips and challenger playback (almost all Android phones currently only support USB2.0), and promote the development of high-speed transfer chips”
As for the environment, USB2.0 reaches a maximum speed of 480 megabits per second (60 megabytes per second), while USB3.2 can operate at speeds of up to 20 gigabits per second (500 megabytes per second). This is a speed increase of more than 40 times.
On the one hand, it makes sense. Professional iPhone models simply shoot in ProRAW, resulting in trail sizes up to 10 times larger than a standard image. ProRAW tends to be used mostly by professional and demanding shooters, so the fast use of USB-C to export those shots can be justified as a Pro requirement.
On the other hand, it doesn’t make sense. That’s because all high-end iPhones shoot 4K video, which uses far more storage than ProRAW and would benefit the most from USB3.2’s pets.
Also, taking a step back, it would be a real shock to see how far Apple is willing to go to close the gap between its Pro and non-Pro iPhones. However, Kuo’s information will mean that the iPhone 15 Pro models will have a great design, make the hardware if right.
With the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus deals on the rise, I’m not convinced that further widening the gap between the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models is the stylish way for Apple to go. Especially considering the expected high prices. Currently, Apple is giving up on this because upgraders are buying the Pro models instead. But this is not sustainable in the long run.
